Google Photos 2024 Recap rolling out with insights, Gemini, and more
With the year winding down, Google Photos is rolling out its 2024 Recap, which has two parts.
The first is an approximately 1-minute “Recap memory” that shows your photos and videos “paired with fun graphics and cinematic effects.” (The animations in my vertical Recap have been pretty good.) There’s also some background music.
It will note how many photos you’ve taken this year and what the “rolls of film” equivalent is, as well as how many videos and the total number of minutes.
In the US, Gemini can add personalized captions “highlighting the two biggest moments from your year,” like big trips or weddings. This is billed as “Google Photos with a little help from Gemini.” Go to Google Photos Settings > Preferences > Gemini features in Photos to enable “Use Gemini in Photos” and “Gemini-powered memories.”
Your 2024 Recap will also have insights that offer “fun and surprising tidbits about your year based on the photos you took.” They appear in the Memories carousel after the Recap memory. This can include:
- Year in smiles: “This year, you captured [number of] smiles. But you smiled the most with…”
- Year in color: “Your most snapped colors this year were…”
- Your top faces: “Your 2024 all-star cast” showing the top four people that appear in your images
- Longest streak
Like other Memories, these can be saved to your Google Photos library — or they will “move to your photo grid in January” — and shared with others.
Google Photos is rolling out the 2024 Recap with a notification alerting you when it’s available. You can also check the top carousel. The Face Groups setting must be enabled to get a Recap.
