Google working on Call Recording & Transcription feature “Call Notes” for Pixel 9

Google is apparently working on yet another AI-powered feature for the Pixel 9 series called “Call Notes.” According to Dylan Roussel, who uncovered this feature on X, it is “call recording and transcription,” but it does not mention summarization. Keep in mind that a lot of this is very similar to what is already available in the Recorder app on Google Pixel devices; it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see summarization being included as well.

While we don’t know, this could be done all on-device. Google is adding quite a bit of RAM to the new Pixels this year—16GB for all the Pro models and 12GB for the regular Pixel 9—and Google has been doing a lot more AI features on-device versus relying on the cloud. Not to mention the fact that the Recorder app is all done on-device, and as mentioned already, this functionality is very similar.

Google is likely adding “Call Notes” in response to Apple Intelligence

With the iOS 18 announcement back in June at WWDC, Apple announced Apple Intelligence, a suite of AI features. None of them are available just yet; they should be available this Fall in beta, but the iPhone is going to be getting a feature just like this Call Notes feature that is being described here. And because Apple is getting a similar feature, it makes this even more likely to be coming to the Pixel later this year.

While Google is announcing the Pixel 9 series on August 13, that doesn’t mean this feature is going to be available at launch. It’s very possible that Google could end up pushing this out as part of a Feature Drop later on in the year, or even next year. In fact, there’s still a feature that Google announced for Pixel 8 last October that has still not arrived. Which would be Zoom Enhance. Of course, we’ll know for sure if this is available at launch or not in the next few weeks as Google’s event is scheduled for August 13.
