Great Outfits in Fashion History: Christina Applegate’s Matching Floral Dress and Scarf
There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
The MTV Video Music Awards red carpet has turned out some of the wildest (read: most experimental) sartorial choices within the celebrity style history book, from meat dresses to seashell-shaped nipple pasties to cone bras. So when a star opts to show up in an outfit that falls more on the “demure” side, it’s bound to be pretty memorable due to its restraint.
At the 1989 VMAs, actor Christina Applegate was “very mindful” and donned an ankle-length floral gown that, taking a cue from the Grace Kelly handbook, she accessorized with a matching scarf glamorously draped around her head, as if she just came from a drive in a convertible through the Italian countryside. She also brought a touch of ’80s glamour to her hair and glam, pairing the look with punchy red lipstick, winged eyeliner and voluminous waves with a deep side part.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a memorable awards show without some piping-hot celebrity gossip: Applegate allegedly ditched her then-boyfriend Brad Pitt that night for another actor. (While she never confirmed who it was, “Gilmore Girls” star Sebastian Bach claimed it was him while promoting his memoir in 2016.)
Relationship drama aside, check out our selects to embrace Applegate’s demure florals for your own wardrobe.
