Great Outfits in Fashion History: Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s 1998 Bright Pink Bob Mackie Gown
There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
Now that Selina Meyer has rightfully reentered the zeitgeist following Vice President Kamala Harris‘s presidential campaign announcement, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has overtaken my entire TikTok feed. (Cue the “Brat” edits.) Before the actor became a cynical fictional U.S. politician on “Veep,” she, of course, dominated the sitcom world as ‘90s city girl (and exquisite dancer) as “Seinfeld“‘s Elaine Benes. And on the occasion of her seventh (!) Emmy nomination for the role back in 1998, the actor attended the awards show in an elegant bright pink satin gown that’s hard to forget.
Featuring an Old Hollywood-inspired corseted silhouette and ruching around the hips, the Bob Mackie dress stood out as a refreshing pop of color on the carpet. White lace decorated the scoop neckline, adding a textural detail.
Louis-Dreyfus went with a floral theme for her accessories: silver and pearl flower earrings and a yellow statement handbag with three-dimensional flowers sprouting from its front. And, instead of sporting Elaine’s gravity-defying curls, Louis-Dreyfus opted for a chic slicked-back updo. She also matched her glam to her gown with a slight pink flush across her cheeks and a rosy mauve lip color.
