Greetings Marshalltown

Greetings Marshalltown — I am Carol Webb, the new City Administrator and a new member of the Marshalltown community. I moved to Marshalltown in mid-August and have had a chance to explore the city, visiting City facilities and several businesses in town, mostly restaurants! I’m struck by the quality of amenities in Marshalltown and feel lucky to have been invited here.

People often ask me, “what does a city administrator do?” I work very closely with the Mayor and City Council to help address community questions and concerns. I also help the Council develop plans and set goals for the city. Planning and goal-setting will begin in the next couple of months prior to the start of budget discussions. I help the Council prepare, monitor, and execute the services and programs funded in the City budget. I also help the Council develop and implement Council-adopted policies and laws. Working with the Council is a privilege, as they represent the residents of Marshalltown.

Another part of my job is to coordinate and direct the daily operations of the city, with lots of help from the wonderful city staff. The staff and I look for ways to improve city processes so that residents have a good experience when utilizing a city service. I help community members, too. I often get calls from residents with concerns or requests for help. The variety of the work is endless which is why I love this job as much as I do. You never know what you might be doing on any given day!

On a personal note, as a native of Iowa and a former farm girl, I have always appreciated the beauty of this part of the country. I lived in Colorado before returning to Iowa, and while the Colorado landscape is beautiful, Iowa possesses a unique beauty and a special place in my heart. Small towns, farms, changing seasons, and a sense of community all make Iowa a special place. Marshalltown has its own unique attributes – multi-cultural and diverse, a rich history, and a strong community spirit are just some of the things that I have observed in my short time here. I have been warmly welcomed by staff, Mayor Greer, City Council, and many residents. I sense a general enthusiasm about new beginnings and I find myself thankful for the invitation to be part of this vibrant community.

If you see me around town – at the grocery store, the farmer’s market, the library, or the coffee shop, please say hello and tell me what you love about Marshalltown and I’ll do the same. I love meeting residents and hearing about their love of community and what makes Marshalltown special. Thank you for inviting me to be a part of your city.
