Grocery Shopping App FlashFood Helps Grocers Sell Soon Expiring Items at Discounted Prices in Santa Clara and Elsewhere

By Robert Haugh

In partnership with Save Mart, Flashfood deals are available at Lucky Supermarkets across the Bay Area.

“With just two stores in Santa Clara right now, Lucky shoppers have saved more than $1,200 on groceries using Flashfood, while diverting more than 1,000 pounds of food from landfill,” stated Calli Brannan, Head of Customer Success at Flashfood.

Since March, the app has saved Bay Area shoppers over $75,000 on their groceries, while diverting more than 45,000 pounds of food from the landfill. The top selling item is a box of mixed, fresh produce, with more than 1,200 sold in the last month alone.

“We announced our partnership with The Save Mart Companies in March 2024, and in just a few short months, we’ve already seen a lot of positive impact for Lucky shoppers,” said Brannan.

“With lack of access to affordable fresh produce being a major issue for many Bay Area families, Flashfood is proud to help Lucky give shoppers more options at an affordable price. We’re looking forward to expanding our partnership with The Save Mart Companies.”

Flashfood partners with grocery stores to take food nearing its best-by date (or in surplus) and lists it on the app for 50 percent off.

The top selling items on Flashfood at Santa Clara’s Lucky stores (Saratoga at Pruneridge, El Camino Real at Lawrence) are:

  1. Produce box
  2. Grass Run Farms 80/20 Ground Beef
  3. Salad Kit
  4. Danimals yogurt
  5. 92% lean ground beef

Flashfood shoppers aren’t shy about sharing their experiences with the app – here’s one review:

“I’ve been a customer for a short while but I’ve been telling everyone about the app. It’s truly given an opportunity. I am supporting a family of 6 on my income alone and while in black and white (and by most public assistance program guidelines) I am doing well … I am not.

We shop at thrift stores and feed our family from the grocery stores based on sales. Your app has provided us the opportunity to have access to foods in equitable supply compared to our neighbors because the store deems it unfit. Just yesterday I roasted 8 large red peppers because they were slightly more bruised than commercial retail probably allows, and now we have fancy roasted bell peppers that will last us a few weeks!”
