Guiding you through the weird Wilmington nexus of end-of-summer-but-not-quite-fall
Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter with me, StarNews reporter John Staton.
We’re at that weird Wilmington nexus of end-of-summer-but-not-quite-fall.
It’s that time when school is in session but there’s still plenty of good beach days left, when a “false fall” early morning chill gives way to upper 80s and humidity by afternoon, and when outdoor concerts and early-season festivals are under a near-constant tropical weather watch.
Anyhoo, as usual, I’m here to guide you through the season and the events, dining options and entertainment news it brings. Let’s get started.
Weekend weather outlook
It’s going to be a bit of a weird weather weekend. Warm (mid-80s) and partly cloudy Friday giving way to rain most of the day on Saturday. Sunday will be cooler (highs in the upper 70s) and overcast, with a slight chance of continued rain.
Go | See | Do
With Labor Day over and done, it’s going to be nice to have Wilmington to ourselves a little bit more than we have for the past few months.
This weekend is a good one to get back out there if you’ve been hiding from the crowds, with a heady mix of music (Jon Pardi at Live Oak Bank Pavilion, Molly Tuttle at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater), theater (“The 39 Steps” in Thalian Hall’s studio), comedy (Derrick Stroupe at Dead Crow), art (Doodle Jam with Wilmington’s own HP Fangs) and even a community event for you green thumbs (the venerable Hobby Greenhouse Fall Plant Sale).

The Dish with Port City Foodies
Food and dining reporter Allison Ballard has news about some of the best Wilmington-area restaurants, at least according to crowd-sourced review site Yelp.
Plus, a Carolina Beach bakery serves up pies (and smiles), an area Chick-Fil-A reopens with expanded service and we’ve got a robust list of local restaurant openings and closings.
Getting to know Wilmington TV
For every Wilmington-shot series that has achieved long-lasting popularity (“Dawson’s Creek,” “One Tree Hill”), there are many others that, for whatever reason, haven’t.
But that doesn’t mean these shows aren’t worth revisiting. Here’s a look at a few Wilmington-shot TV shows you may or may not have heard of.

News you can use
If you want to plan ahead, we just recently published our list of 25 Wilmington-area fall festivals for 2024.
Plus, a Wilmington festival is replacing fireworks with a lighted drone show, and a popular Wilmington-shot TV show could be getting a sequel.
