Half-Life 3 rumors kick off with ominous tease from G-Man voice actor
It’s officially 2025, and something is afoot. Mike Shapiro, the longstanding voice actor behind the ominous G-Man posted a short teaser to round out 2024. Is it for Half-Life 3? Probably not, but there’s a good chance it’s some form of release in the franchise.
The Chinese Democracy of upcoming PC games, Half-Life 3 has now been in the pipeline for 18 years. (Yes, Half-Life 2: Episode Two came out in 2007 – sorry.) The rumor mill has churned ceaselessly in that time, with all sorts of reports emerging about various versions in the works at Valve.
We got some genuine hope in 2020, when Half-Life: Alyx arrived. It wasn’t the threesequel, but it was the first official entry in 13 years. Then, Valve commissioned a pair of anniversary documentaries on the first two FPS games, the second of which included old in-progress footage of Half-Life 3. Acknowledgement! Shapiro’s latest tweet has some fans thinking we’re about to get an announcement in some form.

“Another year already. Good to see and hear from so many of you. May the next quarter-century deliver as many unexpected surprises as did the millennium’s first,” he says, in G-Man’s distinctive delivery. “Then again, time is fluid, like music… See you in the new year.”
There’s definitely an aura to that statement. Included are hashtags for Valve, Half-Life, G-Man, and 2025. What’s raised eyebrows even more is that Shapiro’s not an active poster. His account has been dormant since Alyx came out. So, logic dictates he’s part of some longtail publicity here.
The artwork in his video is from a song he published on December 16, 2024, called ‘Best Long Dog’. It’s the third single he released in 2024, following ‘Magnetic North’ and ‘Steeplechase’, all moody folk songs. They’re good tunes, too, if atmospheric, trad-infused Americana is something you enjoy, but I digress.
This comes on the heels of reports that Half-Life 3 is being playtested at Valve, and a public announcement could come in 2025. Could be coincidence, but that’s a conspicuous alignment.
There’s a distinct possibility this is all for an upcoming album from Shapiro, and he’s simply using his G-Man fame as a way of getting people intrigued. Or if this is a new PC game in the Half-Life universe, it’s not the long-awaited follow-up to Gordon Freeman’s journey.
Keep all expectations in check, is all I’m saying. In the meantime, check out the best horror games and the best action games for more thrills across space and time.
