Harrison County acquires nearly 20 acres of land in Gulfport for sports & recreation complex

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – On Friday, the Harrison County Board of Supervisors announced the acquisition of 19.6 acres of land from the Biloxi School District for a new sports & recreation complex.

The land is located in Gulfport along the west side of Debuys Road, just south of Pass Road.

The county is currently using it for a maintenance barn, but leaders say a better use of the site is something the public can access and enjoy.

“So, what we envision — pickleball is huge right now on the Gulf Coast,” explained Harrison County administrator Robert Collins. “All of our citizens want pickleball. We are intending or looking at using the indoor as well as the outdoor facilities as well, so we can do a combination of maybe indoor pickleball courts, indoor volleyball . . . we may put softball fields, baseball fields. We want a complete complex for the citizens.”

The county paid $1 million for the land. As for what it will cost to transform it into recreation facilities, that won’t be determined until plans are finalized.

County officials hope to move quickly following New Year’s Day.
