Hasbro Partners With Online Gambling Company For Dungeons & Dragons Slot Machine
Summary
- Hasbro has partnered with an online gambling company to create a D&D-themed slot machine.
- Fans are calling the partnership an obvious and shameless cash grab.
- D&D: Tales of Riches is set for release during the first quarter of this year.
Hasbro, the license holder of Dungeons & Dragons (via Wizards of the Coast), has announced a partnership with “igaming” company Games Global. For those unfamiliar with the term, igaming is a synonym for online gambling. The “first release of the collaboration” is Dungeons & Dragons: Tales of Riches, a slot game developed by Neon Valley Studios.
Unfortunately, dabbling in online gambling isn’t out of character for the modern-day Hasbro. The constant acceleration of Magic: The Gathering releases and the gating of basic Dungeons & Dragons content behind paywalls is indicative of the parent company’s extractive nature. There is exclusively negative sentiment surrounding the company’s latest move in a Reddit thread by CosmicJoker42 on the Dungeons & Dragons subreddit.
“As a celebration of 50 years, we will be selling what little soul we have left to make a f**king slot machine,” writes mblunt1201. Tales of Riches won’t be the only product of this collaboration, as the press release promises a “multigame collaboration.”
Roll… I Mean Pull For Initiative
“Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024, Dungeons & Dragons has captivated fans across generations and has become a cultural phenomenon. As part of Hasbro’s year-long celebration of this milestone, Games Global will harness The World’s Greatest Roleplaying Game to create an immersive, high-engagement slot experience, giving operators a chance to tap into the global fanbase,” reads the statement from Games Global.
I’m sure that Dungeons & Dragons fans want nothing more for their half-century celebrations than to play a game designed to part them from their hard-earned money in as efficient a way as possible. I bet Volo smiles at you every time you hit the spin button.
“The first of many exciting releases in this collaboration, the Dungeons & Dragons slot will combine Hasbro’s world-building legacy with Games Global’s expertise, promising to deliver a game that engages, entertains, and transports players to new realms of fantasy,” the press release concludes.
“They own the IP,” writes Zolo49 in the aforementioned thread. “They can do what they want with it, I guess. It’s just irritating that they’re trying to sell it to us as some sort of “celebration” of D&D. We all know it’s nothing more than a cheap cash grab. Trying to claim otherwise is really insulting our intelligence.”
Dungeons & Dragons: Tales of Riches is planned for release during “Q1 2025.”
