Health news: Corewell Health opens new facility; Planet Fitness offers student pass

New Corewell Health Facility opens in Dowagiac

DOWAGIAC —Corewell Health Primary Care Dowagiac is now open at 520 Main St. It will operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 8 a.m. to noon Fridays. Community members are invited to tour the office, meet the care team and register as a patient during an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. June 3. This family-friendly event will include refreshments and free giveaways. The office will provide a full range of services for patients of all ages, including preventative services, chronic condition management and treatment for a variety of health concerns. Planet Fitness’ High School Summer Pass Returns

SOUTH BEND — Planet Fitness announces the return of its High School Summer Pass program, inviting high school teens ages 14-19 to work out for free at any local location, between June 1 and Aug. 31. To register for the program you must sign-up with a parent or guardian in-club or online at PlanetFitness.com/SummerPass. A parent or guardian waiver must be signed for teens to work out alone.  

Classes

SOUTH BEND — Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana will offer the free class “Alzheimer’s and Dementia 101” from 10 to 11 a.m. June 3 in the Care Partner Academy. Patty Piechocki, director of the Institute for Excellence in Memory Care, will lead this live/interactive web session. Participants can connect through their computer. GOSHEN — Chair Yoga will be offered by the Elkhart County Parks at 9:30 a.m. June 6 in the Ox Bow Haus Shelter in Ox Bow Park, 23033 County Road 45. Chair Yoga is a gentle form of yoga that is done while seated or using a chair for balance. Wear comfortable clothing. Some mats are available; bring your own if you have one. This is a free class for those 12 years and older. No registration is required.

SOUTH BEND — The St. Joseph County Public Library, Community Learning Center, 305 S. Michigan St., is offering the following classes:

• Beyond Behaviors: Effective Strategies for Caregivers, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 3 in Classroom E. This class will be led by KidsPeace and Appraise and will offer support and resources to parents who are struggling with typical and challenging behaviors.

• Yoga for EveryBODY from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 5 in the Ballroom.

ELKHART — Elkhart County Parks will offer Yoga in the Park from 6 to 7 p.m. on June 13 at the Cobus Creek Shelter, Cobus Creek County Park, 30680 County Road 8. Join registered yoga teacher Amanda for an hour of empowering yoga. All skill levels welcome. Participants, ages 18 and older, should dress for the weather, bring water and a yoga mat. This class is $5 with advanced registration at https://elkhartcountyparks.recdesk.com/.

MISHAWAKA — The Women’s RiverWalking Club, a free club where women and girls of all ages can connect, share stories and explore the great outdoors, will meet at the Ball Band Biergarten, 230 Ironworks Ave., and hike along the Mishawaka Riverwalk, 3.1 miles. Participants can walk whatever distance they feel comfortable with. The club meets from 6 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday from June through August and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursdays from June through August. The club will not meet on July 3, 4 and 17.

SOUTH BEND — RiverBend Cancer Services Wellness House, 3516 E. Jefferson Blvd., will offer the following “Living Well with Cancer” classes. SOUTH BEND — The fourth annual Wellness and Family Fun Fair: “Riding the Wave into Summer” will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. May 31 in Howard Park, 219 S. St. Louis Blvd. The event is hosted by Mental Health Awareness of Michiana and will offer food trucks, kid’s activities, free prizes, summer sign ups and resource tables. VIRTUAL — Mental Health Awareness of Michiana will host the webinar “Emotional Eating: An Introduction to the Treatment of Eating Disorders” from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 7. Dr. Kelli Rugless, licensed psychologist and certified eating disorders specialist, will be the speaker. 1.5 CE Credits will be available for Indiana-licensed professionals, $20. Student and community rate, $10. Pro-bono counseling project volunteer, free. Support Groups

SOUTH BEND — The New Hope Support Group will meet the first and third Tuesday of each month from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 N. Ironwood. This interdenominational group is for divorced, widows, widowers and anyone suffering grief due to the loss of a loved one. The group meets in a large area of the basement level of the church. ELKHART — An Epilepsy Support Group will meet the first Thursday of every month and is for individuals with epilepsy and families of those with epilepsy. The group meets from 7 to 8 p.m. at St. Thomas School, 1331 Main St., entrance off small parking lot.
