Helldivers 2 Has Lost 90 Percent Of Its Playerbase On Steam

Highlights

  • Helldivers 2 started off 2024 as one of the biggest games in some time, but it’s seen a bit of a decline on PC.
  • According to SteamDB, Helldivers 2 has lost around 90 percent of its playerbase since launch.
  • We don’t know how many players are still on PS5, but there’s still a decently healthy community considering how long the game has been out.

Helldivers 2 only released four months ago (that’s right, 2024 has been long), but it’s already lost around 90 percent of its total player base on Steam.

We’re more than halfway into 2024 now and it’s fair to say that one of the biggest surprises of the year so far has been Helldivers 2. Before launch, it seemed like no one was all that interested in the game aside from fans of the first entry, but it suddenly blew up and became one of the biggest success stories that PlayStation has ever had.

Since launch, Helldivers 2 has had a bit of a rocky time keeping its momentum up, especially when it comes to Steam. We probably don’t need to remind you about that time Sony made PSN sign-ins mandatory and caused whole countries to be unable to play the game. Well, things have gotten better since then, but it seems that Helldivers 2 is losing a little steam on… Steam.

As reported by Forbes, Helldivers 2’s performance on Steam has seen a significant drop since launch, where (according to SteamDB) it managed to reach an impressive peak of 458,709 players. Now, Helldivers 2 on Steam is seeing player peaks of around 44,938 as of the time of writing, which is still a healthy number, but represents a big drop.

There’s no clear reason why this is happening, but at least part of the problem is surely because of PlayStation’s treatment of the game on PC. Even if PSN sign-ins were made optional after a lot of review-bombing, it’s sure to have left a bad taste for some players. Beyond that, it seems that some fans have just lost interest right now, despite some interesting things being in the works.

It’s not easy to access PS5 player numbers, so there’s no easy way to say how many are currently playing on PS5. 44, 938 players on Steam indicates you won’t have a hard time finding a match, though.

If these numbers make you worried about Helldivers 2’s future, then I wouldn’t take them too seriously. For starters, this kind of thing is natural as a game stops being the big new hot thing, which Helly D certainly was at the start of 2024. There are a lot of games that have come out since then, so it was bound to lose a chunk of its players.

It’s also worth noting that these numbers are only representative of the playerbase on PC, Helldivers 2’s secondary console, which means that they’re probably much higher on PS5. We don’t have proof of that and they could be around the same, but the amount of community discussion that still happens daily suggests that there are still a lot of dedicated players.
