Here’s how Ariana Grande feels about theories about Glinda’s sexuality

Ariana Grande is addressing those theories surrounding her Wicked character, Glinda.

Since the premiere of Wicked back in November 2024, many have taken to social media to theorize that Glinda might be a member of the LGBTQ+ community. In an interview with Variety published January 2, Grande says that eagle-eyed viewers may be onto something about Glinda.

“I think she’s a person who loves so much, and I do think that it goes beyond gender, and I think that’s a common theme in Oz,” said Grande. “I also think that the ways in which she loves Elphaba so much, and that forgiveness and that unconditional love that they share — I think they’re in love with each other. I know, yes, it’s platonic…”

According to the outlet, the “We Can’t Be Friends” hitmaker paused before completing her sentence, then teased the second part of the Wicked film series.

“But we’ll talk about it more in depth in movie two,” she said, noting that an upcoming performance of the song “For Good” was a thrill to film. “I do remember, at a point, leaving my body and hovering for, like, the whole week.”

Grande — who is nominated for best supporting actress at the 2025 Golden Globes Awards, set to broadcast on Sunday, January 5 — isn’t the only Glinda invested in the queer theories. In November 2024, Kristen Chenoweth — who originated the role of Glinda in Wicked‘s 2003 Broadway production — revealed that she also believe Glinda might be queer.

After Grande suggested that Glinda “might be a little in the closet” in an interview with The Gay Times around Wicked’s premiere, Chenoweth commented on the news post shared to Instagram, writing “I thought so too way back when…”
