The French word haute means fashionably elegant or high class.
Fashionably elegant trash fashions and trash art will once again enliven The Capitol Theatre stage in Nelson on Saturday, June 15 at 7 p.m., with the second annual Haute Trash! Trash Fashion Show Competition and Art Exhibition.
In this lively runway style trash fashion show, artists and designers ranging in age from 10 to 100 can compete to win cash and prizes (donated by over 30 local businesses) with their original designs crafted from post consumer waste and upcycled materials.
Ensembles and accessory pieces will grace the runway and trash art will be on display. There will also be some trash-themed performances of dance, music, spoken word and puppetry by the likes of the RhythmTrash Orchestra and Ocean Waves among other local favourites.
The aim of this inclusive community event is to generate awareness about the garbage we make, our relationship to it, and imagining creative ideas to keep items out of the landfills all while engaging in and appreciating the artistic process.
“We all amass waste, that’s just a fact of life,” says Haute Trash organizer Marilyn Hatfield, Nelson’s Cultural Ambassador for 2020. “The Haute Trash event provides us with the opportunity to alter the lens through which we see this garbage and re-imagine it into beautiful and innovative wearable art and sculpture.”
