HIGHLIGHTS: Softball regionals begin as part of busy day of high school sports
WESTON, Wis. (WSAW) – It was a full night of sports in central Wisconsin on Thursday, ranging from baseball to softball and soccer to lacrosse as teams began postseason play officially or kept the hot pursuit on for conference crowns.
Beginning with soccer, the D.C. Everest girls kept their perfect home record alive with a 7-0 win over SPASH. The Evergreens recorded six first-half goals, capped off by a find from Brynn Kampann. Jenna Baumann knocked in two goals in the win as D.C. Everest moves to 6-0-1 in the Valley, turning their attention towards a weekend tournament. SPASH falls to 3-4 in conference. They’ll return home to host Wausau West on Tuesday.
In lacrosse, the Wausau Wild capped off their regular season home slate with an emphatic 15-6 win over Oneida Nation on senior night. The Wild built a big halftime lead and preserved it in the final two frames. They play their final regular season game on Saturday at Elkhorn.
The postseason officially got underway in softball as regionals began across the state. In D5, #8 Northland Lutheran hosted #9 Elcho. The Hornets struck first with a two-run triple by Hannah Schmidt in the first inning. Their bats would heat up as the game went on, putting up 14 runs in their 14-2 win over the Wildcats in five innings. The win sends them into the next round of regionals where they’ll face #1 Laona/Wabeno.
Over on the baseball diamond, Northland Lutheran claimed their first conference crown since 2018 with a 15-8 win over Bowler in Kronenwetter. The Wildcats rode a nine-run second inning to build the big lead that helped them win the CWC-North outright. Both teams now turn their attention towards to postseason.
