HOAX: Canadian Embassy did not announce jobs for 240 people

The embassy refuted the claim.

This TikTok post claiming to show an announcement by the Canadian Embassy on new job opportunities for 240 people is a HOAX.

The post claims that the Canadian Embassy offers a monthly salary of 36,500 Birr, a house allowance of 8,000 Birr, and a transport allowance of 4,000 Birr for 240 people.

The Amharic text translates to, “New employment. Salary: 36,500 birr, house rentals: 8,000 birr, transport: 4,000. Quantity: 240 jobs.”

“Canada Embassy Job,” the post added.

In addition to referencing the Embassy, the payment is purportedly in Birr, the Ethiopian currency, indicating that the claimed job offer is local.

PesaCheck contacted Julie Lafortune, Canada’s Communications Advisor for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, who refuted the claim via email.

“The claim is incorrect; no such program exists,” she responded to PesaCheck’s query.

Furthermore, PesaCheck reviewed the Embassy of Canada to Ethiopia’s verified Facebook page and website. However, the alleged information was not found.

In June 2024, PesaCheck also debunked an immigration-related claim that involved the Canadian government.

PesaCheck has examined a TikTok post purportedly of the Canadian Embassy’s announcement of job opportunities for 240 people and found it to be a HOAX.
