Holden P.D. asks drivers on Route 1A for their help to ensure smooth travel

Maine (WABI) – Summer is here, and so is the increase in traffic on Route 1A.

With folks traveling to Ellsworth and MDI, 1A can become a busy and sometimes dangerous route.

Holden Police say there were an estimated four million drivers last year that ventured to Acadia, and they believe 80 percent of those traveled on Route 1A.

They say top citation issues are drivers not paying attention due to being on their phones, and drivers not moving over for police and other emergency vehicles.

“And one car accident can mess up the day for thousands of people, and I take us back to just a few weeks ago, they did some paving. And there were a lot of complaints because they paved a section of the road and backed up traffic. And that was just paving, and the traffic was actually still flowing. With some of the crashes that we investigate, we can’t always allow the traffic to flow, and so, then it backs up, you know, on 395 and backs up all the way, you know, into Dedham. So, if everyone’s paying attention and doing their part, we don’t have to deal with crashes. We don’t have to interrupt that flow,” said Lieutenant Andrew Whitehouse of Holden Police Department.

Lieutenant Whitehouse added the DOT did a recent study estimating that Route 1A has 40,000 drivers per day.
