Holy Family Medical hosts free sports physical clinic for students

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH)— A Wichita medical clinic is offering free sports physicals to help make back-to-school less stressful for parents of student-athletes.

Holy Family Medical, a nonprofit healthcare organization, offered free exams Saturday at the Atwood Neighborhood Resource Center.

Kansas law requires a pre-participation physical exam each year before kids hit the field.

Pediatric nurse practitioner Amanda Walden said these yearly exams are important to help identify any potential health issues that could arise during athletic activities.

“To make sure that we know that they’re healthy or if there is something that needs to checked out, such as cardiac issues is a common and big one, even muscular-skeletal stuff, orthopedic stuff where maybe they’ve had an injury and hasn’t actually been cleared for them to play sports,” said Walden. “It’s important that we make sure that they’re cleared and they’re ready to go.”

Holy Family Medical said they hold several free exam events before the start of school because they know it’s a busy time of year when many families are trying to be seen by a provider.
