Hometown Jobs: 3D Printing Bootcamp provides job oppertunities

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – If you have an interest in 3D printing as a career, there’s a way to sign up for a workshop now and get paid for your time.

The Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board is hosting a 3D printing bootcamp.

“We will have very intensive training for the individuals to first of all build their own 3D printer, and then to use that to produce some things during the weeks, some different projects they’ll have an opportunity to work on, and at the end of the boot camp, they will be able to keep their printer and they also will get a MacBook Air they will be able to keep.”

It encourages a career in 3D printing.

“They’ll be learning, of course, how the 3D printer works. What are the different functions of it? What are the different limitations of 3D printing and there will be a lot of different employers that we will expose them to who do use 3D printing in house currently, so during the course of each day, a different business will co me in to talk to them about career opportunities.”

It was inspired by a need for people in this line of work.

“A lot of our businesses have gone to using 3D printing in house. They use 3D printing to make new parts for their machinery if they break down. So it’s a more cost-efficient way for them to get the pieces they need and to also get them in a more timely manner.”

The bootcamp is free to attend but there is an application process.

“They’re getting paid as a work experience by one of the businesses who is our official sponsor of the boot camp, and they’re coming out with the skill at the end.”
