Hometown Jobs: Registration for Construction Camp now open

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Are you interested in a career in construction, or do you know a young person who might be? Registration is now open for a paid experience that could point you in the right direction.

The Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board and Build Smart Institute are hosting a Construction Camp. The goal is to introduce those who might be interested in a career in construction to opportunities right here in our hometowns.

“They each will create a project that Build Smart Institute will oversee and in doing so, whatever tools we buy for them to use, they will get to keep and take home with them. So they’ll be able to start a small toolkit of their own. The program also consists of taking field trips out to real build jobs, to see what are the different careers that take place in a building site,” said Toni McLawhorn, Business & Development Manager.

Participants will also gain job training skills and be paid for their time.

“They’ll be doing some job readiness, things like resume preparations and mock job interviews, we have some online training tips and tools that they will do related to specifics about the construction industry, skills that they would need to know,” said McLawhorn.

The camp is open to those 18 to 24 years old.

“Not currently enrolled in school. We are looking to try to help people who may be looking for an opportunity, they might have had a job and not liked it and left but now don’t know what to do,” said McLawhorn.

McLawhorn said they plan to do more of these camps for other high-demand fields in our hometowns.

“We felt like these would be more targeted and give them something to look at and say, you know, if you think you’re interested in construction, if you think you’re interested in health care, one of the other topics that we’re considering, this would be a good opportunity to explore it,” said McLawhorn.

The camp will take place June 3 to June 7. Registration is open now and there are limited spots available. The deadline to register is May 20th and you can click here to register.
