The latest iPhone might be on store shelves sooner than you think.

Apple is hosting a special event Monday, Sept. 9, in which the tech giant is expected to unveil its latest mobile phone — the iPhone 16, along with its pro and pro max models.

Many outlets have since pinpointed a specific launch date for the new iPhone, though its unconfirmed by Apple officials. But if the new mobile device is announced during Monday’s event, Indiana can expect customers lining up outside its Apple stores as soon as this month.

When is the iPhone 16 rumored to be released?

While Apple has not officially announced when the iPhone 16 will be released, both Forbes and consumer technology publication CNET anticipate the earliest sales date would be Friday, Sept. 20.

How did they come to that date? By marking the calendar after Monday’s scheduled event, which has a tagline of “It’s Glowtime.” New iPhones typically go on sale shortly after these events, experts said, saying new iPhone sales usually begin the Friday of the following week.

“And, if the rumors are true, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro will each get a number of significant updates from new power-efficient displays and larger screens to better zoom lenses and the inclusion of an action button for all 2024 iPhone models,” CNET’s Sareena Dayaram wrote.

What will the iPhone 16 look like?

Not much is confirmed about what the iPhone 16 will look like. According to Bloomberg, the iPhone 16 is expected to have larger screens on its Pro models and new camera features, such as a dedicated button for snapping photos.

The colors for Pro models could also be refreshed, Bloomberg reports, with fans seeing a return of rose gold.

In May, an industry analyst cited in MacRumors.com predicted Pro models would likely be available in black, white, silver, gray, along with rose gold being substituted for blue titanium. The iPhone 16 base model could see colors that include black, green, pink, blue, and white.

How much could an iPhone 16 cost?

Apple hasn’t released anything official yet about the potential cost of the iPhone 16. Several tech media outlets, however, believe the price might be going up.

Higher production costs, fancier cameras and new artificial intelligence tools could make the iPhone 16 more expensive, writes CNET’s Abrar Al-Heeti. Though it’s still too early to tell, Apple could either use the iPhone 16’s release to raise the overall base price by another $100 like it did the last time there was a model upgrade, or — given how wary U.S. consumers are about the economy — keep prices similar to the iPhone 15, which runs $799 – $1,199.

What upgrades can iPhone users expect?

Apple is rolling out several artificial intelligence tools called Apple Intelligence, which the company highlighted during the Worldwide Developers Conference in June of this year.

The new AI will include writing tools that can analyze a user’s email and essentially rewrite it to sound more friendly, professional or concise. Apple Intelligence, according to a promotional video, will also include a feature called Genmojis, allowing you type in a short image description and create your own emojis.

Siri is also getting an upgrade, according to Apple, who said the AI assistant will be better at comprehending questions and requests, allowing people to speak more naturally.

You can also purchase iPhones at most phone carriers, as well as retailers such as BestBuy, Target and Walmart.

Announced during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, CEO Tim Cook and other company leaders announced the new update and its new features. It will debut this fall as a free download for iPhone Xs and later, with some experts predicting it will come around the same time as the iPhone 16 launch.

Some of the features that iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence brings, according to Apple and USA TODAY, are:

  • More customizable home screens.
  • Genmojis, artificial intelligence-generated emojis that users can create with a description.
  • Schedule a message.
  • Redesigned photos app, including allowing users to search through photos by the month or year taken.
  • Image Playground, which allows users to create images or get suggested concepts related to their conversations in messages.
  • Rewrite, proofread and summarize text in mail, notes, pages and third-party apps.
  • Transcription services in the notes and phone app.

What time is the Apple event?

The Apple event will go live at 1 p.m. EST on Monday, Sept. 9. Anyone can watch it on apple.com, the Apple TV app or its YouTube channel.
