RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Although Tuesday’s weather hasn’t indicated it, it’s almost summer. That means South Dakota teens will be getting jobs. But what can they expect and how can parents help?

The summer season is typically when teenagers get their first job. They’re out of school for three months, are getting their driver’s licenses, and are looking to make some extra money. But CEO of BusyKid Gregg Murset says some teens may have a rude awakening joining the workforce this summer and offered some tips to help kids prepare

“I would say have a good attitude, have a good outlook and get after it and work hard. Next thing you know you’re going to have a bunch of money and I think it’s very important when you do earn that money to have a balanced financial approach,” Murset said.

Murset also mentioned that it’s not just on the kids to go out and learn everything themselves, it’s a parent’s responsibility to help prepare their kids by helping them in their job search or finding creative ways to put them to work.

“I think that they should go out, literally take pictures of stuff all around their house that they want to get done but they never have the time to do it and hire their kids to do it. I got tons of stuff done because they did it and they busted it out and they earned some money and they were happy, I was happy,” Murset said.

Murset’s last piece of advice was for parents to help their kids create a balanced spending trend so they can have fun with friends during the summer but also save for the future and become more self-sufficient in the long run.
