How to find free entertainment at this year’s Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON — Coming to the Kansas State Fair this week doesn’t have to break the bank with plenty of free options for entertainment around the fairgrounds in Hutchinson.

Whether it’s listening to a band or singer, seeing a ventriloquist, laughing along to a comedic circus act or even biting nails as an escape artist finds her way out of a bind, there is something fun — and free — for everyone to enjoy.

Following is a look at some of the free entertainment found throughout the grounds at the Kansas State Fair.

The Cosmosphere’s Dr. Goddard’s Lab

Beginning at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. each day at the Education Center is Dr. Goddard’s Lab, an interactive show using live demonstrations, including the lighting of gunpowder and the effects of liquid oxygen, to teach people of all ages about the history of rockets as well as the science behind propulsion.

Named after Dr. Robert Goddard, the engineer and pioneer of the first liquid-fueled rocket, this lab experience comes courtesy of Hutchinson’s own Cosmosphere International SciEd Center and Space Museum.

Allez-OOPS! circus and comedy fun

Roving throughout the fairgrounds is Rob Lok, a graduate of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, who brings his Allez-OOPS! show.

Allez-OOPS! combines circus, comedy, clowning, slapstick humor and general silliness, into a fun and family-friendly act that is sure to entertain anyone who stops by.

Death-defying escapes from Lady Houdini

With two or more shows each day in Gottschalk Park, Kristen Johnson also known as Lady Houdini, will keep the audience on the edge of their seats with her performances.

According to the state fair website, Lady Houdini’s act has wowed people around the world with her increasingly difficult escapes, including upside down from a straight jacket and leading to her finale of a water tank escape.

See life-like prehistoric creators with Dino+Refuge

Whether it’s by their tent near Lake Talbott or throughout the day roving around the fairgrounds, fairgoers can up close and personal with prehistoric reptiles as they visit with the Dino+Refuge.

Handlers of these animatronic and life-like dinosaurs will be on site with baby dinos, a life-size Spinosaurus and even the opportunity of a photo op inside a giant dino egg.
