How to make those New Year’s fitness goals stick

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – We all set ourselves up to have New Year’s resolutions, but sometimes it can be hard to stick with them.

If you aim to focus on your fitness in the new year, it may seem like like unreachable goal at first. However, Courtney Leger, Club Manager of Planet Fitness Lake Charles, said setting small goals can make all the difference.

“Whenever you head to the gym, don’t come in with a big giant goal that can be hard to obtain. Start with something small, something that is easier to obtain. It’s easy to stay motivated that way, it just helps you stay motivated throughout the year,” Leger said. “You celebrate the small wins, and we’ll celebrate with you.”

According to a 2023 Forbes Health poll, most people give up on their resolutions after less than four months. However, Leger said you can avoid being a part of that statistic if you keep a few things in mind.

“Don’t focus on the skill, focus on what exactly you want to achieve this year. Whether it is your mental health, physical health, or cognitive health, (know) what your main goal is and take small steps to get there. Also, have a set plan and we can help you set a plan,” Leger said.

Leger said to not be intimidated by big machines and the amount of people at the gym.

“Don’t be intimated, we are here for you. We are here to help you feel comfortable, this is a judgment-free zone. Everything is easy to use, and very user-friendly. We have a fitness instructor who can help you every step of the way,” Leger said.
