Quarterly Highlights

In Q2 2023, 13.98 million U.S. air travelers headed to overseas destinations, marking an 8.9% increase compared to Q2 2019. The total number of U.S. outbound air travelers for this period was 18.7 million. Among the overseas destinations, the United Kingdom was the most visited with 1.6 million travelers, a 25% increase from Q2 2019. Italy followed with 1.5 million travelers, up 35%, while France saw 1.3 million travelers, a 22% increase. The Dominican Republic and Spain had 993,000 and 867,000 travelers, respectively, with increases of 14% and 18%.

Annual Trends

Overall, U.S. outbound travel rebounded to 80.7 million in 2022, up 64% from 2021 and nearly 81% of the 2019 record of 99.7 million. Mexico saw a 17% increase from 2021, reaching 84% of its 2019 level with 33.5 million travelers. Canada, with 9.1 million travelers, rose 334% from 2021 but only achieved 61% of its 2019 level. Overseas destinations saw a 109% increase from 2021, reaching 85% of the 2019 level with 38.1 million travelers.

The top overseas countries visited were the United Kingdom (3.7 million), France (3.1 million), the Dominican Republic (2.7 million), Italy (2.6 million), and Germany/Spain (both 2.0 million).

State of Residence

The leading states of residence for U.S. travelers to overseas destinations were California (5.4 million), New York (5.1 million), Florida (4.5 million), Texas (2.9 million), and New Jersey (2.5 million).

Traveler Demographics and Behavior

The average U.S. outbound traveler had a combined annual household income of $148,000, stayed 17.9 nights, and spent $1,783 outside of the United States. They typically began planning their trips 102 days before departure. The main purpose of travel was Vacation/Holiday (67%), followed by Visit Friends/Relatives (44%) and Business (9%). Popular leisure activities included Sightseeing (79.5%), Shopping (71%), exploring Small Towns/Countryside (47.4%), visiting Historical Locations (40.7%), and experiencing Fine Dining (36.9%).
