Hummer Sports Park track under construction
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – As the park is over 20 years old, it was time for some repairs.
Director of the park Annette Wiles says the project has been in the works for several years.
A lot of concrete has slowly deteriorated along the sideline and in the end zone and this was causing drainage issues.
Construction began May 27 removing the rubber track surface and will add additional asphalt milling. Wiles said it has affected the football field but it was on track too.
They’ve continued to host high school track meets but they were told in 2022 those repairs were necessary to have postseason meets to be held
”We’re hoping for doors of opportunity to open for not only just area high school regional events for our track but also for our rental opportunities for colleges as well. The Kansas Sunflower State Games use our facility as well in the summer. We host additional rental events within the facility and we’re hoping that this opens those doors of opportunity for us to attract, college meets and also Midwest Regional meets for club track teams in the summer time,” Wiles said.
This project will cost $1.2 million and should be complete in the middle of August. The track will remain red and have extra lane exchange.
