“I Completely Redesigned the Outfit. I Can’t Believe I Had the Audacity to Do That”—Victoria Beckham on her First Versace Look

It was an atypical Wednesday at Vogue headquarters. Instead of the usual hustle and bustle of Condé Nast staffers entering and exiting the building, a slew of A-listers entered and exited the building, turning the usual hum-drum office office into a fan-signing event. And few people can bring a heightened kind of excitement to both pop culture and fashion lovers, quite like the one and only Victoria Beckham.

Today the fashion designer, business mogul and pop star sat with Vogue’s Anna Wintour to discuss her trajectory from Spice Girl to fashion mogul. Her storied career in fashion began back in her “Posh Spice” days, recalling a moment when designer Donatella Versace called her up to have attend her show in Milan. Not only did Donatella set Beckham up with a private plane to escort her to Milan from London (which by the way, Victoria, pointed out, was her first-ever private plane moment), but she also had a personal audience with the designer, who dressed her for the show. “I put the clothes on and said I liked it, but “how about we change the length?” Beckham recalled. “I completely redesigned the outfit, I can’t believe I had the audacity to do that. I liked the outfit and it was coming from such a sweet, innocent place but when I look back I think, how could I have ever said that to Donatella?” Wintour reassured her that Donatella probably appreciated her humor and honesty.

While Beckham was a bona-fide celebrity when she first decided to become a fashion designer, she had to put in the work to earn her stripes. She counts Marc Jacobs as one of the first people who reached out to her with some friendly advice about entering the industry, and credits Roland Mouret as one of her mentors. “[He] was a mentor from the beginning. He was probably the one designer who believed in me right from the start and supported me,” she said.

Coming off the hugely successful Beckham documentary series, it’s obvious that the designer and her family are no stranger to the camera, but now it is the designer who is getting the star treatment, as a new docu-series will follow the designer as she takes her company to the next level. Wintour, certain that this series will also be a hit like Beckham one suggested that a feature biopic about Victoria and David could be next on the to-do list for the famous couple. Wintour’s dream cast includes Margaret Qualley taking on the leading lady role of playing Victoria, while Joe Alwyn would play David. Perhaps the two Brits can collaborate on making this fantasy film casting come true in the near future.
