New cars have gotten really expensive.

The new Nissan Kicks, a compact SUV, is one of the few new cars on the market that can be fully loaded for around $30,000. The all-wheel drive option with the premium package (which includes a panoramic moonroof and heated front seats) costs $31,020.

I can’t express to you what a rare find that is these days. The $30,000 car is an endangered species, particularly after the industry largely ditched affordable sedans and small cars in favor of larger and more expensive SUVs.

After taking the Nissan Kicks for an hourlong drive in Metro Detroit, I was impressed by the level of tech and styling for the price tag. It could make a great first car for a teenage driver or an option for someone with a limited budget who doesn’t want a used car.
