I travel from Seattle to Mexico just to get my hair done

The upkeep with hair coloring is a time-consuming and expensive task, so one woman regularly travels to Mexico keep her luscious locks looking good, claiming it’s worth it financially

TikTok user Shey lives in Seattle, Washington, but will take advantage of trips to Guadalajara, Mexico, to visit her grandmother by getting her hair colored at the same time – and the price is comparable.

‘I travel from Seattle to Mexico every three months to get my hair done,’ she shared in a recent clip posted to TikTok.

‘I’m actually six months overdue because my grandma came to the US to visit me,’ she shared.

Shey said her hairdresser operates out of a room in her house, but has never been able to find a colorist as good as her.

‘I started going to her before the pandemic and she just does the right color,’ she explained.

Shey has previously shared her travel day traveling to Guadalajara and getting her hair done.

‘She’s literally so amazing,’ Shey gushed. ‘No one in Seattle can do the color that she does on me.’

Shey revealed she has been going to the woman since 2019, and hasn’t missed a quarterly appointment since.

She said: ‘Even though I’m always going blonde she always leaves my hair feeling so healthy.

‘I always tell her that I want my hair lighter or darker and she does her thing,’ she continued, adding: ‘I don’t even show her a picture.’

She added that she also asks her hairdresser to chop off ‘half’ her hair.

‘Haircuts in Seattle are so expensive,’ she pointed out. ‘I refuse to pay Seattle prices.’

Shey said another major reason she waits to get her hair cut and colored in Mexico is because her hair dresser studied at a cosmetology school in Mexico and knows how to cut hair well.

‘In Washington, they don’t really know how to cut Mexican hair and you leave looking like a broom,’ she quipped.

According to The Seattle Times, hair coloring starts at around $160 but at more high-end salons the starting price can be as high as $350.

Shey isn’t the first person to go the distance with her hair stylist, with beauty tourism a booming market.

Last year, influencer Bryn Elise Wright, 28, from Boulder, Colorado, went viral after revealing she travels more than 6,000 miles just to get her hair done.

The social media star explained in a video that she began voyaging all the way across the globe to Istanbul for hair extensions – and she insisted that she’s able to save more than $3,000 each time.

The influencer explained that although she ‘loved’ her hair salon in the US, she was forced to look elsewhere after they announced that they were raising their prices last year.

She explained that they began charging $4,450 for three rows of 24-inch extensions, which was a little too steep for her.

‘I realized a lot of the hair inspo photos that I had saved from Instagram were done by this stylist that lived in Turkey,’ she continued.

‘So just out of curiosity I slid into his DMs to get a quote, and tell me why this man said he’d do my dream hair for $500.’

She said she paid around $800 for the flight and another $350 for her week-long stay in an Airbnb, she said the trip was still much less than the $4,450 she would have had to spend if she got it done in the US.
