‘I want a holiday here!’ Gardeners’ World fans gush over U2 guitarist’s ‘magical’ garden after rock legend makes surprise appearance on show

Fans have gushed over U2 legend Adam Clayton’s ‘magical’ garden after he showed it off in a surprise appearance on Gardeners’ World yesterday.

The guitarist, 64, who has been with the rock band since it’s formation, toured his incredible garden for the programme, noting it had taken 30 years to get to this stage.

It has a river winding through the land, with more than 4,000 trees planted and idyllic islands within the water, creating a serene space away from rock and roll.

The garden is full of flowers, tall grass and a multitude of species, creating a natural, accidental look which fits perfectly with the surrounding wildlife within Dublin.

Other areas include a walled garden, and a spot where hundreds of pink flowers bloom.

Mr Clayton said: ‘I think this is an adolescent garden in reality.

‘I’ve put 30 years into planting and shaping it, and I can just see what it’s going to be. I might not be around for it, but I can see where it’s headed.’

The garden impressed fans of the programme, who took to social media to gush over the beautiful garden, which spans across a huge area.

One person said: ‘Now I love Adam more. I want a holiday in his garden!’

She added: ‘Tomorrow i am going to name my rose plant. It will be called #AdamsRose.’

Another viewer said: ‘I wish BBC Two had a like button. Exceptional #gardenersworld tonight. Adam Clayton’s garden and story a revelation.’

During the show, Mr Clayton was asked how his garden came to be.

He said: ‘The very beginning was, for me, I went to a boarding school at the age of 13 which is literally over the other field, and I used to look over the wall and come over here in the early days of smokes and cigarettes and there was this lovely little river that ran through it.

‘Flash forward to, we’re looking for somewhere to record The Joshua Tree, and our management pick this house and I’m going ‘oh my goodness, this is one step over from my boarding school, how weird to come back here.’

‘At the end of the recording, the owner said “Look, if any of the band want to buy the house, I’d be up to taking the cost of the rental off the house”.’

So, he did just that.

Mr Clayton has since planted more than 4,000 trees in the garden, and worked to restore the river that runs through the middle of it.
