ICTC to Build Calexico East POE Travel Hub with $12.6M Grant » Holtville Tribune
CALEXICO — The Imperial County Transportation Commission has been awarded $12.6 million in grant funding with the goal of developing a Calexico East Port of Entry Intermodal Transportation Center.
The funding is from the 2024 Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program through the California State Transportation Agency.
The Calexico East project is meant to create a “transformative transportation hub that integrates various modes of transportation, including public transit buses and shuttles. The facility is anticipated to offer amenities such as shade, seating, bicycle parking, signage, and travel guidance, addressing the current lack of amenities and transportation options for pedestrians crossing the border at the Calexico East POE. Additionally, this project will bring four new zero emission vehicles to provide public transit services to the area,” according to the Imperial County Transportation Commission.
The ICTC-led multi-year project will incorporate several phases including planning, design and environmental clearance, right-of-way acquisition and construction, with an estimated completion date in 2030, according to ICTC.
“As chairman of the Imperial County Board of Supervisors and the Imperial County Transportation Commission, I commend the California State Transportation Agency for its commitment to advancing public transportation across our state, including our region. The allocation of over $1 billion for public transportation is a critical investment in our communities, helping to reduce travel barriers, enhance sustainability, and support economic growth,” stated Luis Plancarte, chairman of the Board of Supervisors and ICTC.
“For Imperial County and the Imperial County Transportation Commission, improving accessibility and safety in transportation is essential to serving our residents, many of whom depend on reliable transit options. We are committed to working with state partners to ensure that our region receives the resources needed to enhance our infrastructure and address the unique challenges of our rural communities. This funding is a powerful step towards a future where transportation is more equitable, resilient, and environmentally conscious,” Plancarte added.
In its press release, CalSTA Secretary Toks Omishakin said, “Under Governor Newsom’s leadership, California is furthering its commitment to fund transit projects that boost the state’s zero-emissions goals. This critical investment is yet another major step towards growing a more sustainable and equitable transit system for those who work, live and play in California.”
It is anticipated that the project will start its planning phase in early 2025.
