In honor of the cool events we missed out on, don’t miss out this weekend
Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter John Staton.
I don’t usually write about the events I missed, but hopefully some of you were in the big crowd on Monday that turned out to see hip-hop icon Talib Kweli at Waterline Brewing downtown.
With most venues in town hardly ever booking hip-hop for whatever reason, Wilmington promoter and filmmaker Chris Everett of the 3 Chambers media platform and music festival has really stepped it up to bring folks like Kweli to town, and Monday’s turnout at Waterline proves there is in fact a local market for it.
Stay tuned for announcements of acts coming to 3 Chambers Festival Dec. 4-7 later this year.
And now, let’s see what’s going down this weekend.
Weekend weather outlook
It’ll be a rainy start to the weekend on Friday and into Saturday morning (maybe watch the Olympics). By Saturday afternoon, however, we should begin to see some clearing leading into a sunny, beach-perfect Sunday with highs “only” in the mid to upper 80s.
Go | See | Do
We’ve made it to the final weekend in July, and summer events in Wilmington are in full swing.
Plenty of variety with this weekend, with a comedic play at Thalian Hall (Big Dawg Productions’ howler “The Real Inspector Hound”), the final weekend for Opera Wilmington’s “Tosca” at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, lots of new art for Fourth Friday Gallery Night and plenty of concerts.

The Dish with Port City Foodies
If you like to save money, food writer Allison Ballard has a super-sweet list of happy hour food specials at Wilmington-area restaurants.
And while there’s a fairly long list of area restaurants that have closed recently, a longtime favorite Thai restaurant in Southport is planning to make its return.
Getting to know Carole King
In case you haven’t heard, crowds are packing the house at Thalian Hall for “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” Tickets for the rest of the run, which ends Sunday afternoon, are scant at best, but there are still a few left.
