In two weeks, Samsung may seal the fate of its dual-folding Galaxy phone

Do you recall the recent rumors about Samsung working on a dual-folding Galaxy phone for 2025? They are back with extra info on the side. The Korean media reports that development is in full swing and on track for a 2025 release.

Furthermore, anonymous industry sources via ETNews say Samsung will settle on the dual-folding phone’s final design by the end of November. Samsung [supply chain] partners are also making preparations, the report says.

A couple of weeks ago, our friends at GalaxyClub helped us bring three new codenames to light, each representing a key part of Samsung’s foldable lineup for 2025.

Two codenames, B7 and Q7, were associated with the standard Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Fold 7.

The third codename, Q7M, was linked with an unknown Galaxy Fold variant. Whether it’s another Special Edition Fold or a dual-folding device (or anything else in between) remains to be seen.

A tablet-sized foldable screen

Assuming Samsung will indeed embrace a new form factor for its innovative foldable display technology, the device will supposedly have a 9 or 10-inch screen.

It will be a tablet-sized device with two hinges, similar to Huawei’s very rare and very expensive Mate XT Ultimate. The latter has a 10.2-inch dual-folding panel.

It’s unclear what form factor Samsung’s dual-folding phone will adopt, but assuming the rumors are true, the company will set its design in stone before the end of November. Samsung must make it count, as this phone will compete with Huawei’s Mate XT (and similar devices) in a brand-new foldable sub-segment.

Huawei took the Z-shape design route, which has serious durability concerns in the long term. Z-shaped dual-folding devices have at least one-third of the foldable screen exposed at all times. A small portion of the screen also wraps around the outside of one of the edges, making it even more vulnerable.

More details after the video

In recent years, Samsung Display demonstrated numerous multi-foldable form factors at tech events around the world. Our videos above show a bunch of ‘Flex’ displays from the MWC 2023 show floor.

However, those devices were just there to show off the display arm’s innovative panels and weren’t necessarily indicative of what Samsung’s Mobile division might develop in the end. So, whatever Samsung Mobile might be cooking, it could look vastly different from what we saw at MWC.
