More than 190 million people in the U.S. play video games at least one hour each week. That’s according to the annual Essential Facts about the U.S. Video Game Industry report, which shows that 61% of Americans between the ages of 5 and 90 pick up a controller to game.
President Stanley Pierre-Louis of the Entertainment Software Association said that playing video games is one of the most important mediums for entertainment.
“What we see consistently over these past three decades now is that people love video games and it’s an important pastime in their lives and it continues to be a favorite pastime,” he told Missourinet.
The report also found that the average player is 36 years old, and the average adult player has been playing for 17 years.
“We found this year that 46% of people who play games are women,” he explained. “We also found that older populations as people mature, they continue to play. So, when we first did this survey in 1999 of people who were 50 years old and older, 9% said that they play games. Today that number is 29%.”
According to the report, most Americans believe that video games bring joy, provide mental stimulation, and relieves stress.
“They find that playing helps with their mental acuity,” Pierre-Louis said. “There are some studies that say it helps slow down dementia. So, you’re finding that there are these positive impacts that also bring on health benefits for various populations.”
