Indy high school sports: Three finalists for Marion County Female Athlete of the Year

The Marion County Athletic Association will soon name its City and County Athletes of the Year, an award that dates to 1950 and grew to include girls’ achievements in 1979.

The awards are geared toward athletic achievement, but almost every winner over the years has exhibited impressive credentials in and out of their athletic, academic and personal areas. Generally, multi-sport athletes are given consideration over single-sport athletes, though in some cases a single-sport athlete has been so outstanding that he or she has been selected as the winner.

Here are the three finalists for County Female Athlete of the Year (last year’s winner was Park Tudor’s Gretchen Farley):

Breece Bass, Franklin Central

The three-sport athlete accumulated 10 varsity letters in soccer (four), track and field (four) and wrestling (two) during her high school career and was named the Marion County Coaches of Girls Sports Association Female Athlete of the Year for 2024.

Bass won the regional as a senior in girls wrestling and finished fifth at the state meet. The Murray State soccer recruit led her Franklin Central soccer team to its first sectional championship since 2018 in the fall. She qualified for state as a junior in the 400-meter run in track and field and took first last week in the sectional meet in the 400.

Bass was named the Courage Award winner at the Indiana High School Sports awards, was the Jeff Cougill scholarship award winner for top student athlete at Franklin Central and the Community Health female scholar athlete award winner, among her many accomplishments. She ranks in the top-10 in seven track and field events at Franklin Central.

Bass will be the first person in her family to attend college. She plans to study business management and psychology at Murray State.

Malone Moore, Beech Grove

Moore earned 12 varsity letters in softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball and swimming. Moore was named all-county softball as a freshman, sophomore and junior and should earn it a fourth time as a senior.

Malone, the Indiana Crossroads Conference player of the year as a sophomore, will be a four-time all-conference selection. The Coastal Carolina softball recruit has shattered Beech Grove records for hitting in a season and career in batting average, home runs, on-base percentage, hits and RBIs. For pitching, she will have the school record for strikeouts and earned run average in a season and career.

Malone, named third team all-state in Class 3A/4A as a junior in softball, also holds the school record in basketball for blocked shots in a game. She is on Beech Grove’s Student Athletic Leadership Team, has volunteered to read books to elementary students, served at a food pantry, volunteered for little league concessions and worked wrestling events.

Malone has plans to study exercise science at Coastal Carolina with plans to become a physical therapist.

Maddie Rocchio, North Central

Rocchio earned eight varsity letters in cross-country and track and field. She was the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference champion in cross-country as a junior and senior and all-state selection both years.

In track and field, Rocchio set North Central records in the indoor 1,600 meters (5:09.1), the indoor mile (5:13.3), the indoor 4×800-meter relay (9:41.7), the indoor 4xmile relay (21:21.6).  Among accomplishments are the 2023 MIC 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter championships and the 2024 MIC Indoor distance medley relay championship. She helped her cross-country team to four sectional championships and two regional titles and was part of North Central’s track and field state championship as a sophomore.

Rocchio was a four-time academic all-conference selection. She plans to run at Indiana University.
