Instagram to penalise low-performing Reels, here is what it will do to them – Technology News

Instagram is one of the most used social media in today’s era. From watching videos to binging on reels, we just keep on scrolling through the platform. But imagine suddenly some videos with just 20 views get blurred or the quality drops to 144p. The reason? Well Instagram is prioritizing its video/reel content. Now it will provide high quality for most viewed videos and lower the quality of the least viewed ones.

According to a Instagram video AMA, posted by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the social media platform will reduce the quality of least popular videos. Here’s a detailed look at how your ‘Instagramming’ will change soon!

Spotlight on ‘Top-viewed videos’

So, how does this feature work? Well, the least viewed/ less liked videos or reels will be shown at a lower quality. On the other hand, the most viewed/ most liked videos or reels will be shown in a high quality. The algorithm will focus on videos which will generate higher engagement metrics, such as likes, views and comments. It will also focus on the speed at which a video gains views, the number of shares, and the overall interaction it gets just  after being posted.

Ad Fatigue: The marketing challenge that no one talks about but why?

But why this sudden change and how can it benefit you? So, The new update aims to update user engagement and retention. The reason? By focusing on popular videos, Instagram aims to bring more users  and create a more dynamic feed for you.

However, the new update raised a range of questions among users. Some said that they focus on content and not ‘ideally popular’ videos. So, why should they compromise their experience? In response to this, Mosseri said that the change in the video quality “isn’t huge.” Also, a Thread user lindseygamble_  reposted an explainer video by Mosseri. Notably, this video was earlier posted by Mosseri on his account. “In general, we want to show the highest-quality video we can … But if something isn’t watched for a long time — because the vast majority of views are in the beginning — we will move to a lower quality video,” Mosseri explained in the video.

The way ahead

This initiative comes after the rising competition among ‘content creators’. For the last few years, content creation has become a serious job for many. Even though it has helped many to get an ‘out of the box’ career path, it has also raised competition among all content creators. So, in order to address the competitive landscape of social media platforms, this initiative has been taken., says Mosseri.

Taking things ahead, the new initiative will also help content creators to get rewarded for the hard work that they put into their contents. This way creators who drive more views, will get more audiences.
