Introducing the 2024 Enquirer Fall All-Stars for Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky
As 2024 comes to a close, here are The Enquirer’s Fall All-Star teams for cross country, field hockey, golf, Ohio girls tennis and water polo.
The all-city teams for football, volleyball and soccer were released earlier this month.
Boys cross country

Division I
Runner of the year
Alex Bruns, St. Xavier: Even after the graduation of Evan Trapp, Bruns continued to uphold the standard of excellence for the Bombers. He won five meets in Ohio as well as a semi-national meet in Louisville, Kentucky. His personal best of 14:39.86, run on Sept. 21, is a new school record. Bruns won his first Greater Catholic League-South and district titles before taking the runner-up spot at both the regional and state meets.
Coach of the year
Jim Brandt, Little Miami: He led the Panthers to the best season in school history. They won Eastern Cincinnati Conference and district titles, a runner-up finish at the regional meet and a third-place finish at state. Little Miami qualified for state for the second time ever, recording the best finish in school history.

Runner of the year
Nathaniel Gockerman, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy: The sophomore took his high school career to new heights in 2024. He finished in the top six of every race and enjoyed an undefeated month of October, winning four races. He took home his second Miami Valley Conference title and his first district and regional crowns. Gockerman capped off his season with a sixth-place finish at the state meet in a new personal best of 15:29.98.
Coach of the year
Matt Esche, CHCA: He led the Eagles to a second straight MVC title where their top five runners finished in the top 10, and a district title in which the five scoring runners finished in the top 20. CHCA proceeded to take third place at the regional meet and seventh place at the state meet.

Liam Woodward, Summit Country Day: He was once again the low stick for the Silver Knights. Woodward only ran in six races but finished in the top five four times, including a district title. In his third state championship appearance, he took 25th place in 16:07.73.

Steve Krebsfanger, Miami Valley Christian Academy: He led the Lions to a third-place finish at the district meet and a seventh-place finish at the regional meet.

Northern Kentucky and Indiana
Runner of the year
Paul Van Laningham, Cooper: The junior rewrote the record books at every level. He won six races and placed in the top six of every race held in Kentucky. He won his first Class 3A, Region 5 championship and became Cooper’s first state champion in a new Class 3A course record time of 15:19.87. After the high school season, he ran a personal best of 14:56.2 at the Nike Cross Nationals regional meet and took 33rd place at the Nike national meet in Portland, Oregon.

Brian Rapien, Villa Madonna: Under Rapien’s guidance, the Vikings broke through to win their first Class 1A team state title while also winning the Class 1A, Region 4 title. Each of the top five runners ran a personal best.

Runner of the year
Ava Shepard, Lakota West: With senior Evelyn Prodoehl out for the majority of the season, Shepard carried the torch for the Firebirds. She earned her first career win on Aug. 24 and logged a top-10 finish in every race. She won the Greater Miami Conference title, helped Lakota West win a district team title, took third place at regionals and eighth place at state. Shepard also recorded a new personal best of 17:35.52.
Coach of the year
Amelia Oberschlake, Talawanda: The Braves had a year to remember thanks to Oberschlake. They won their eighth straight Southwest Ohio Conference title, a first-ever regional title and took fourth place at the state championship. When running at full strength, Talawanda won four team titles during the season.

Abby Sewell, Mercy McAuley: She had a massive senior season, running under 20 minutes for the first time in the first meet of the season for a four-minute personal best. Sewell ran a personal best in over half of her races, culminating in a district and regional individual title, and a second-place finish at the state championship in 18:08.28.
Coach of the year
Jimmy Barton, Waynesville: He led the Spartans to a second-place finish at the district and regional meets, and a 14th-place finish at the state meet. Six of Waynesville’s top seven runners achieved a personal best during the season.

Callie Fox, Summit Country Day: The junior had a breakout year with six top-10 finishes. Fox saved her best for the postseason, winning the MVC and district titles before taking third place at the regional meet. Her 18th-place finish at the state meet in a new personal best of 18:49.72 led the Silver Knights to a runner-up team finish, their best-ever result.

Tana Luckie, Seven Hills: She coached the Stingers to a fourth-place finish at the district meet and a 10th-place finish at the regional meet.

Joe Durrett, Notre Dame Academy: He led the Pandas to a runner-up finish at the Class 3A, Region 5 meet, their best finish since 2017. Notre Dame also took fifth place at the state meet, its best team result since 2010.

Cayse Morgan, Elder: Morgan was the Greater Catholic League-South Athlete of the Year for the third-straight season and was the district co-medalist after shooting a 72 to qualify for his third OHSAA state tournament.
Coach of the year
David Lunn, Anderson: Lunn coached Anderson to its first Eastern Cincinnati Conference championship before leading the Raptors to the OHSAA state tournament where they finished in ninth. Lunn was named the ECC and Southwest District Coach of the Year.

Finley Bartlett, Wyoming: Bartlett won his third Cincinnati Hills League Athlete of the Year honor before winning district co-medalist honors and his second-consecutive Division II state championship.

James Vining, Seven Hills: Vining coached Seven Hills to a 32-stroke victory at the Division III sectional tournament and a runner-up finish at the district tournament to qualify for state. At the state finals, Seven Hills placed fifth.

Ben Carter, St. Henry: The senior was the Region 7 champion by one stroke, leading St. Henry to the Region 7 team title. Carter then shot an even-par 72 at the KHSAA first round to finish tied for sixth place.
Paxton McKelvey, Ryle: McKelvey, a junior, was a second-team all-state selection. McKelvey was the only Northern Kentucky boys golfer to be on either first or second team.
Coach of the year
Jerod Cahill, St. Henry: St. Henry won the Kentucky All “A” Classic state tournament. In KHSAA competition, St. Henry won the Region 7 title before reaching the state tournament finals, placing eighth.

Eva Becerril, Sycamore: The junior was the Greater Miami Conference Athlete of the Year for the second time. Becerril reached the Division I state tournament, shooting a 68 on the second day to finish with a 143, winning the state championship by three strokes.
Coach of the year
Darin Hausberger, Anderson: The Anderson Raptors won the Eastern Cincinnati Conference for the second time in three seasons to begin the postseason. The Raptors then finished as sectional and district champions before finishing the season in ninth at the OHSAA Division I state tournament.

Jumpei Okuda, Ryle: Okuda’s Raiders shot a 325 at the Region 7 tournament, winning the championship by 36 strokes. Ryle qualified for the state first round, finishing in fourth at Shelbyville.

Field hockey
Player of the year
Laura Fagan, Mount Notre Dame: Fagan won this award as a junior last season and followed it up by nearly doubling her point total in her senior season. She scored 22 goals and added 22 assists in 20 games for the Southwest Region champion Cougars.
Coach of the year
Tara Rose, Indian Hill: Rose has greatly increased the reach of Indian Hill’s field hockey program, including starting a middle school program three years ago. In the Braves’ first year with that program’s participants reaching varsity, the team went 16-3, its best record since at least 2018.

Ohio Division I
Player of the year
Addison Cassidy, Mason: The junior won the Division I singles state championship her first time in the tournament, losing just one game in the final match.
Doubles team of the year
Emma Wagner-Pratyusha Chaudhuri, Mason: Back-to-back winners of both this award and the Division I doubles state championship, Mason’s star duo didn’t lose more than three games in a set for the entire state tournament. Wagner is just a sophomore and Chaudhuri is a junior, so they’ll have a chance to three-peat next season.
Coach of the year
Mike Reid, Mason: Reid was the only Division I coach to have more than two qualifiers for the state tournament between singles and doubles, and he had five. Mason swept the state tournament this year and also won a team state championship at the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association tournament for the eighth straight season.

Ohio Division II
Player of the year
Sophia Thompson, Indian Hill: The junior dominated on her way to the Division II state semifinals, where she gave the eventual state champion, Amiya Bowles from Bexley, her toughest test of the tournament in a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 match. Thompson and Bowles have squared off in the Division II state championship each of the last three years, and the current juniors will have a chance to do it again in 2025.
Doubles team of the year
Caroline Brown-Cassie Larsen, Indian Hill: Brown and Larsen lost just one game in the first two matches of the state championship tournament before losing in the semifinals to the eventual state champions. They were the only duo to take the eventual champs to a third set in the state tournament. Brown is committed to Colgate to play tennis, while Larsen is committed to Furman to play lacrosse.
Coach of the year
Wade Ward, Indian Hill: Ward led Indian Hill to its 28th consecutive Cincinnati Hills League Championship and its second Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division II state championship. It was Ward’s last season at Indian Hill, because he took an assistant coaching position at Cornell University.

Player of the year
Cole Dowden, Sycamore: Dowden broke multiple records for Sycamore this season, including the most blocks in a game (20) career blocks (572) and more. From the goalie position, he was a threat all over the pool, taking player of the year in a very strong field.
Coach of the year
Adam Livingston, Mason: A year removed from graduating its entire starting lineup, Mason was poised to take several steps back. Livingston was able to build reshape the entire starting lineup and depth off the bench in just a matter of weeks and did so with developing the youth on the team. Mason started only two seniors and relied heavily on multiple underclassmen to be one of the top teams in the city.

Girls water polo
Player of the year
Mariam NDiyae, Mason: was the anchor of a Mason team that finished fourth in the state this year, and had the highest finish of any Cincinnati team in the state. Mariam led Mason in goals, exclusions drawn, and steals and was second in assists. She could play any position in the water, but would often be found in center with defenses scrambling to triple team her. She has committed to playing water polo at the University of Michigan.
Coach of the year
Savannah Cross, Mason: In just her first year as a head coach, Livingston was able to lead Mason girls to achievements that have not been seen in many years. Some of those accomplishments include securing the first win against crosstown rival Sycamore since Mason won a state title in 2013. In addition to that, this was the first time in Mason water polo history that they finished with an undefeated record against longtime powerhouse Sycamore. Mason also achieved their first win over the Mavericks since 2017
