‘Invisible to the outside world’: IT business proposes hidden Columbia County data center
A Columbia County entrepreneur needs zoning changed on a piece of family property to establish a privately concealed cybersecurity business and data center.
Applicant Zachary Lewallen and property owners David L. and Faye Lewallen have asked Columbia County planners to change almost 4 acres on Ray Owens Road from RA, residential agricultural, to an S-1 special zoning to construct a private office for Hypertek Solutions.
A private office with storage space would cover more than 12,000 square feet, according to the project narrative.
The space also would include a SOC2 Type 2 certified data center. That specific designation means it’s been audited and has shown heightened compliance in data security.
“This data center will house server racks enabling cloud hosting, disaster recovery solutions and support (for) client apps that the applicant develops and hosts,” the narrative said. “The data center will serve small- to medium-sized businesses and county initiatives.”
The business would have a private entrance for vehicles and a proposed 40-foot buffer would keep the building from being seen from the road.
The privacy measures underscores “the applicant’s intention for this project to be invisible to the outside world, keeping consistent with the private nature of the project and better serving the compliance and security needs of the applicant,” the narrative said.
The Columbia County Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the rezoning request at its Dec. 5 meeting.
