Iowa Hawkeye Sports Buffet

For Hawkeye fans, the next few months are akin to floating around the ocean on a small boat with no sail. It’s warm-ish and beautiful but also kinda crappy as we don’t have our Hawkeye sports to quench our thirst. A lot of little things are going on in Hawkeyeland, and these will have to suffice for now.

Molly Davis – Grad Assistant Evansville Women’s Basketball

The Headband is moving on. Molly is heading to Indiana to join Robyn Scheer-Wells’ staff. Davis started 27 games for Lisa Bluder’s Hawk team this year. Davis averaged 5.9 points, 3 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game. Davis shot 41% from three this season and 86% from the line. Molly was loved by her coaches, teammates, and fans. I have a feeling that the student-athletes from a Lisa Bluder/Jan Jensen-coached team will be highly sought after once their playing days are done. Iowa coaches in all sports seem to put a premium on being good human beings. Another reason why It’s Great to Be a Hawkeye!

Pat Angerer Joins Gary Dolphin in the Radio Booth

When Ed Podolak retired, my first two thoughts about replacing him were Matt Roth and Pat. These Hawkeyes carry their love of the program on their sleeves. Pat was a bad, bad man on the football field, and it will be fun to listen to him on Saturdays in the fall. Kirk Ferentz remarked that Angerer was, “the heartbeat of our team.” I’m sure Eddie P. will still be enjoying games in Kinnick this season, but it will also be great to get a new set of eyes in the booth.

Brody Brecht is Taking His Talents to The Show (eventually)

Brody Brecht recently declared for the Major League Baseball draft. Brecht was a first-team All-B1G performer as well as a first-team American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Midwest award winner. Brecht throws 100 mph and has some pretty nasty stuff on the mound. Some indications are that Brecht will be drafted in the first round of the MLB draft. Brecht played two sports at Iowa, and I venture to think that we will see him in the Bigs within two to three years.

Adam Mazur Gets Called Up from the Minors to the Majors

Former Hawkeye pitcher Adam Mazur has made two starts for the San Diego Padres. In his minor league starts, Mazur was 4-3 with an ERA of 3.86. In the past handful of years, there has been a resurgence of Iowa baseball under Rick Heller. The Hawkeyes are consistently developing players who can play at the next level.

Hawkeye Baseball Gets an Arm in the Transfer Portal

The Hawkeyes picked up a right-handed pitcher from Bradley. Jacob Kisting will bolster Iowa’s pitching staff. Kisting was 7-14 in college with an ERA of 5.50. Kisting can throw in the 90’s and any time you add an experienced player, it helps the ballclub. The Hawkeyes faced Bradley this past season, but Kisting did not enter the game.

Two Iowa Baseball Players Named Academic All-District

Ben DeTaeye and Davis Cop were named College Sports Communicators Academic All-District. To be eligible, nominees must have a 3.5 GPA and completed one full calendar year at their institution. They must also be a starter or an important reserve. In the big picture, this is far more important than throwing, catching, or hitting a ball. Well done, Hawks!

Lucy Olsen and First Year Players Arrive

In the post-Caitlin Clark era (and Lisa Bluder) of Iowa basketball, Hawk fans are going to be wondering what next year will bring. Here’s a quick statistical snapshot of what Hawk fans can expect from Olsen. Last year at Villanova Lucy averaged 23.3 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.4 spg. Olsen stuffs the stat sheet. Expect another excellent year from the Jan Jensen-led Hawkeye women.
