iPhone 16 Pro Max To Come With Upgraded 48MP Main and Ultra-Wide Cameras, Creating A Gap With The iPhone 16 Pro

The iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to undergo major design changes, starting from bigger screen sizes and an overall bigger profile. The devices will also boast a slew of internal variations that will be utilized by the company’s forthcoming generative AI features. While the company is on a roll to integrate AI at a system level, it is now being tipped that the bigger iPhone 16 Pro Max will come with new 48MP wide and ultra-wide cameras.

iPhone 16 Pro Max will come with improved cameras, including a 48MP ultra-wide lens for better low-light shots

The iPhone 15 Pro models come with a 48MP wide camera, but the ultra-wide camera has been stuck at 12MP for a while. This year’s flagship release will feature a 48MP ultra-wide angle camera, but it appears that the slightly smaller iPhone 16 Pro will miss out on the upgraded sensor. A Weibo user by the name of OvO Baby Sauce OvO claims that the main camera on the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be upgraded with an advanced custom 48MP Sony IMX903 sensor. On the flip side, the smaller 6.3-inch iPhone 16 Pro will come with a 48MP custom Sony IMX 803 sensor, which is also available on the current models.

Apart from the upgraded main camera, the leaker sheds light on the ultra-wide lens, which will jump to 48MP for the first time. Note that this is not the first time we have shared details on upgraded camera sensors on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Leaker Digital Chat Station also corroborated earlier this year that the highest-end iPhone 16 Pro Max would be equipped with improved sensors for better low-light shots. He also claimed that the 48MP camera on the Pro Max would be equipped with a stacked design, a 14-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter or ADC, and a Digital Gain Control or DCG for enhanced dynamic range and noise reduction.

By the end of last year, we also heard that Apple could be bridging the gap between the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max as far as the camera features are concerned. This means that both ‘Pro’ models would come with a 48MP ultra-wide lens, but we can not be certain at this stage. Next year, we are speculating that the company will transition all camera sensors on the iPhone 17 Pro models to the 48MP bandwagon, including the telephoto lenses.

Apple’s iPhone 16 lineup is expected to launch in September of this year with upgraded internals, such as the A18 and A18 Pro chip, alongside a handful of additional upgrades. The devices will also be the first ones specifically designed to handle Apple’s forthcoming generative AI features with iOS 18. Do you think Apple will keep the camera hardware the same on both ‘Pro’ models of the iPhone 16?
