Is Azerbaijan safe to visit? Travel information after plane crash

The fatal crash of a plane that departed from Azerbaijan has raised questions about the safety of traveling to the country.

On Wednesday, Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 caught fire as it tried to make an emergency landing in Aktau, southwestern Kazakhstan. It was traveling from Baku, the Azeri capital, to Grozny, the capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya.

Kazakh officials said 38 people were killed in the crash, including an 11-year-old boy and his mother, with 67 people on board at the time—nationals from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia.

Sources have suggested that a Russian surface-to-air missile system was responsible for the crash, but their reports have not been confirmed.

On December 26, Azerbaijan observed a day of mourning in connection with the crash.

Newsweek contacted the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan, the Azeri Embassy in the U.S. and the Azerbaijan Tourism Board for comment via email on Friday.

Is Azerbaijan Safe to Visit?

The crash has prompted concerns about travel safety to and from Azerbaijan, a country located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Bordered by the Caspian Sea to the east, Azerbaijan is famous for its blend of ancient traditions and contemporary advancements.

Its capital, Baku, showcases this contrast with its historic Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside futuristic architecture such as the Flame Towers, a reference to Azerbaijan’s nickname “the Land of Fire.”

Azerbaijan’s history is deeply rooted in the Silk Road, which contributed to its multicultural influences. The country is also celebrated for its natural beauty, including the Caucasus Mountains and mud volcanoes.

Its tourism sector has proved resilient in the face of challenges, such as regional tensions and the COVID-19 pandemic. With its rich cultural heritage, vibrant capital city and stunning natural landscapes, the country continues to attract millions of visitors annually.

The Azeri government has launched a thorough investigation into the crash, which occurred outside Azerbaijan’s airspace and does not necessarily reflect the overall safety of air travel within the country.

Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended flights to certain destinations pending the investigation. As the investigation into the crash unfolds, Azeri authorities are working to reassure the global community of their commitment to safety and transparency.

Aviation accidents in Azerbaijan are relatively rare, and the country’s infrastructure has seen significant modernization in recent years, including a comprehensive refurbishment at Baku’s Heydar Aliyev International Airport.

Travelers are encouraged to stay informed and make decisions based on reliable, up-to-date information.

What Has the U.S. Government Said?

Current travel advisories for Azerbaijan remain unchanged. The U.S. Department of State maintains a Level 2 advisory, recommending that travelers exercise “increased caution” because of terrorism concerns and areas of armed conflict, particularly near the borders with Armenia and in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Similarly, the U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises against all travel within 5 km (3 miles) of the Armenian border because of ongoing tensions.

For those planning to visit Azerbaijan, the U.S. State Department recommends the following:
