Is it too late for a good deal on holiday travel? Not quite

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The turkey will be on the table before you know it, so if you haven’t made travel plans yet, it’s time.

“Airfare is just too volatile to say you should book on this exact day, so don’t necessarily harp on one day that you’re booking by,” said Katy Nastro, a travel expert with travel membership site Going. “Just make sure that you’re doing it sooner rather than later, and staying within that end of September, into early October window.”

Discounted domestic deals will likely be few and far between on high-demand travel days, but if you want to travel abroad, that may be your ticket. Going found a roundtrip flight over Thanksgiving from Phoenix to Helsinki for less than $500.

“With a lot of these flights being overnight, especially if you’re looking to go to Europe, you can have your turkey dinner and get a great deal to an incredible destination,” Nastro said.

The best deal doesn’t cost anything, but is it worth using points and miles to cover a holiday trip?

“Even though you probably won’t get as much bang for your buck if you use points during the holiday season, it can sometimes still make sense,” said Julian Kheel, CEO and Founder of Points Path. “The key is to be flexible with your travel plans. Be willing to travel at a different hour of the day, early morning, late at night, or even an alternate destination and airport nearby where you need to get to.”
