“It’s a great loss for our world:” Plains community remembers Jimmy Carter
PLAINS, Ga. (WTVM) – Citizens of Plains, Georgia are mourning the loss of native and former president Jimmy Carter and reflecting on his life and legacy.
“My thoughts really are with the family, and there are so many family members who live in Plains, and my thoughts are just with them because it’s their dad,” said Suzanne Taylor, donor of The Carter Center
Plains residents said that Carter was not just a typical politician but a friend, a neighbor, and their favorite prankster.
“President Carter has been an international influence, but some of his greatest influence, he and Mrs. Carter, has been right here in Plains, Georgia,” said resident Andrew Greer.
“I actually got to meet him. I was in my 20’s. We rode the train, my uncle catered an event for him, and he talked to me like I was a normal person,” former resident Angela Harris said. “I wish that I had been old enough to appreciate the time that I did get to spend with him, and understand what kind of impact that actually would have on my life.”
Although emotions were high, residents said Carter’s legacy will forever live on.
“I know that many of us spoke with him over the years about what he wanted his influence to be in Plains, and it was just as another neighbor,” said Greer. “It’s a great loss for our world. He’s one of the greatest men of peace, but also one of the greatest friends to the world. So, we will miss him sorely.” said Greer.
“While I’m very sad he is gone, I think what more could he have done. He lived a very full life,” said Taylor
