I’ve tried canceling my Crunch Fitness membership for years – it hurt my credit

A WOMAN was left outraged after being charged for a Crunch Fitness membership she had tried to cancel.

She claimed the fitness club sent her to collections after repeatedly charging her for the membership she didn’t use.

In June 2024, Charrell Renee — a former Michigan resident who moved during the coronavirus pandemic — shared her unfortunate Crunch Fitness situation on social media.

“I haven’t lived in MI since 2020. I tried canceling my Crunch Fitness membership during COVID bc why are you charging me & gyms are closed???” she wrote in a Facebook post.

“Then I moved. They knew I tried canceling. These ppl still kept charging me & the nearest gym from me now is over 200 miles away,” she continued.

“Now they reported me to collections over $85.

“This was not on my bingo card & I’m pissed bc I tried canceling this & putting this crap on my credit report is insane.”

It was not immediately clear which location the woman was referring to.

The U.S. Sun has contacted Crunch Fitness for comment.

SHARED OUTRAGE

Other Facebook users took to the comments to show their support for Renee and their anger towards Crunch Fitness.

“Insane,” Kasey Jeter wrote.

“I am pissed. Then gon say pay it. Huh? Why would I pay!?” Renee replied to Jeter.

Porsche Lee encouraged Renee to “stay on the heads with this one” and revealed that she also had issues canceling her membership.

Renee responded, revealing that she “changed her whole account number bc these ppl were dodging me.”

She continued, “They think I ‘paid’ 2020-2022, when really my bank just gave me my money back.

“Now almost 24 mos later you put it on my credit? I was so confused bc I’m like why wouldn’t I pay an $85 bill?? & it’s these dumb a*ses smh & offering me a deal to settle is insane when you were supposed to cancel it years ago!”

Ra Ogbon Olorun Bey also emphasized the difficulties in terminating a Crunch Fitness membership, commenting, “You have to write a 10 page essay explaining why you’re canceling.”

Jeremiah Murph then joined the conversation, writing, “We need to find a way to file reverse collections, they will keep charging you knowing d*mn well nobody been to that gym in 3yrs lol.”

Crunch Fitness cancelation policy

Crunch Fitness was founded in 1989 and now has over 400 fitness clubs across the US, Puerto Rico, Canada,

Per its website, members looking to cancel their memberships should directly contact their home gym or contact the corporation online.

Since some Crunch fitness clubs are independently owned and run by franchisees, cancellation policies and procedures may change due to a member’s location based on state and local guidelines.

The company notes that cancellation requests are not processed until members have received confirmation from their gym.

Renee — who now lives in Houston, Texas — replied, “I NEVER stepped a foot in there.

“That was another reason for me canceling. Talking abt now you have to come in to cancel..from Houston? Lmao.”

COMMON PROBLEM

Crunch Fitness is not the only gym accused of making it difficult for members to cancel their memberships.

In January, a Planet Fitness customer was surprised after learning memberships can only be canceled in person.

Planet Fitness later faced more backlash for its policies.

In July, a former member was kicked out for his gym attire, sparking outrage among Facebook users.
