Students at Jacks Valley Elementary School are learning important lessons on upcycling, recycling, and design – through clothing.
The “No-Sew Fashion” class, taught by teacher Dayna Haley, is giving students experience in creativity and sustainability – in a stylish way.
The exploration class is introducing kids to the art of upcycled fashion – where clothes are repurposed and transformed from gently-used clothing into unique, wearable pieces.
And perhaps the best part: None of the new fashions require any sewing.
The class helps to answer the basic question of “Where do our clothes come from?” This leads to discussions on fast fashion, and how fast fashion is having a negative impact on our environment.
While exploring the life cycle of a t-shirt, the students created vision boards while learning techniques like painting, cutting and gluing to give their upcycled clothing new life in a new design.
Then, last week, the class hosted a fashion show for the whole school. Some students walked a runway wearing their creations. They also hosted a pop-up fashion shop where they could sell some of their creations to the community.
