Jackson State softball wins in walk-off fashion in round 2 of SWAC Tournament

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLBT) – Jackson State softball faced a trip to the Loser’s Bracket in the 2024 SWAC Tournament Wednesday night, sitting three runs back of Alabama State in the bottom of the 8th inning. The Lady Hornets scored three in the top half of the extra frame, but the Lady Tigers were determined to win the game.

With one out in the final inning, Mari Stephens performed in the clutch, blasting a game-tying three-run homerun to give the Lady Tigers momentum. After Stephens’ homer, Ka’Liyah Gipson singled to put the winning run on base. Meah Almaraz hit into a fielder’s choice, but with one out remaining before an extra frame, Jace Jackson ended things, doubling to right center to bring Almaraz home.

With the win, Jackson State advances to play Florida A&M Thursday for a chance to go to the state championship game.
