Jake Moody will remain 49ers’ kicker for Week 18
49ers kicker Jake Moody will remain the team’s kicker in Week 18 despite his struggles.
“He’s going to kick this week,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday.
The 49ers are out of playoff contention and won’t have starting quarterback Brock Purdy as they limp to the finish line, so there is little reason to tryout kickers this week. Moody, though, can expect competition for his job in the offseason.
He missed three more kicks Monday night, with a 51-yarder that was wide right, a 58-yarder that was wide left and an extra point that was wide right. The 49ers lost to the Lions 40-34, and his onside kick sailed out of bounds with 43 seconds left.
Moody made 13 of 14 field goals and 12 extra points before injuring his kicking ankle in Week 5. Since returning Week 10, he has made only 10 of 18 attempts and 17 of 18 extra points.
After Monday night’s game, Moody called it one of the lowest times of his career but said his confidence remains high.
“You have no other choice as a kicker. You’ve just got to keep staying confident in yourself, otherwise you’ve got nothing,” he said, via Tanya Wildt of the Detroit Free Press.
