Jennifer Lawrence Has Found Fall’s Alternative Pumps
Jennifer Lawrence’s fashion flats are already being referred to online as “cool-mum staples”— which was, of course, always going to happen. Famous people announce they’re expecting a child and all of a sudden their fashion choices are almost exclusively discussed in relation to their pregnancies. Rather than, I don’t know, being seen as a reflection of their tastes and interests like any other person with a mind of their own.
“Wouldn’t it be great if we—yes, we know we play a part in propelling the pregnancy style juggernaut—didn’t weigh in on everything Jennifer Lawrence wears between now and the birth,” argued this magazine’s executive fashion news and features editor Alice Newbold in a recent article. “Because spoiler alert, it’s likely to be the same mix of The Row, Leset and Loewe.” True: the Dior shirt dress and triangular pumps that Lawrence wore yesterday evening to the Los Angeles screening of Zurawski v Texas—a documentary about the impact of regressive anti-abortion laws in Texas that she executive produced alongside Hillary Clinton—could have appeared at any point in time.
Pregnant or not, this Dior ambassador owns a vast collection of impractical slippers, including, but not limited to, Melissa’s gum-textured fisherman sandals, The Row’s paper-thin “non-shoes”, red-carpet flip-flops and mesh ballerinas transparent enough to reveal the outline of her toes. But here’s something even more notable: Lawrence decided to make her first red-carpet appearance since announcing she was expecting her second child at the premiere of an abortion film. It is an embodiment of power when wombs—not to mention waistlines—continue to be monitored, policed and legislated against. “I had a very fortunate pregnancy,” the actor told Abby Aguirre in 2022. “But every single second of my life was different. And it would occur to me sometimes: what if I was forced to do this?”
