Jim Carrey’s Older Sister Dies, Says Grieving Husband: ‘Rita Was My Bestest Friend’

Jim Carrey’s older sister Rita Carrey has died, according to a Facebook post from her widowed husband, Alex.

A cause of death for the Canadian singer, who also worked as the radio show co-host and producer of “The Peet & Reet Show,” has yet to be disclosed.

“It is with a heavy heart and my deepest sadness, surrounded by her family and friends Rita passed away peacefully and quietly on November 14 2024,” he wrote Friday. “Rita and I (Alex) have been together for 16 years and we just got married last year in July.”

“We travelled the world and met many people who we consider friends,” Alex added. “Rita was my bestest friend, my lover and my beautiful wife. Rita always had a loving soul and wanted to help everyone even total strangers.”

The widower noted that Christmas, which is mere weeks away, was “Rita’s favourite holiday” — but that his late wife was such a giving person that the season “was everyday for her.”

Her brother Jim, best known for his string of iconic 1990s comedies “The Mask,” “Dumb and Dumber” and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” as well as his award-winning performances in “The Truman Show” and “Man on the Moon,” has yet to comment on Rita’s death.

The loss comes five years after their brother John Carrey died of aplastic anemia, a rare blood disease that occurs when the bone marrow is unable to produce enough new blood cells, in 2019. Jim now has only one sibling left, Patricia Carrey Fournier.

Rita’s famous brother, Jim Carrey, has yet to publicly comment on his loss.

Alex shared Friday that there will be a candlelight vigil for Carrey in Ontario, Canada on Dec. 7. The public event will be in support of a local shelter for survivors of domestic abuse.

Alex concluded Friday by wishing his wife farewell with a reference to James Blunt’s 2004 song “Goodbye My Lover.”

“It’s been a wonderful and crazy journey with Rita,” he wrote on Facebook. “She filled everyone’s heart with joy with every step she took and I will never forget this beautiful and amazingly talented woman. Goodbye my lover. Goodbye my friend. Until we meet again.”
