Construction is right on schedule for a 1.5 million square foot electric vehicle battery plant in Florence County, according to Florence County Economic Development Partnership CEO Gregg Robinson.

“Everything is moving in the right direction. And we’re very excited. If you add the height of the building. Because in certain sections of the building, it’s over 100 feet tall it’s about a 18 million ft. so, therefore that makes it largest buildings in the Eastern Carolinas and that is just building number one. We are still going to move forward with building number to as well. But we still have to determine what size that building will be,“ said Robinson.

Robinson said the county is building an industrial park near the battery plant.

“We’re building a new industrial park. With AESC as our anchor. This is an 1,000 acre development called Florence Global Technology Park. And We are partnering with AESC as the tenant.”

He added construction is underway on the training center for the AESC battery plant being built along Highway 327 in Florence County.

The facility is being built in partnership with the state.

Robinson said overall all parties involved are pleased with the progress.

“We had some very good meetings with BMW and an AESC as well. As well as our department of commerce, we had our secretary of commerce come over for a personal tour. To see the progress as being made with the state training center.”

Officials with AESC have temporarily located at a building on Dunbarton Drive and the SiMT facility in Florence.

“They are subletting some temporary space. They also have space at the SIMT at Florence Darlington Tech. But they are growing. So, they need to have all of the engineers in one space. So, they rented the third floor of that building. He and more than likely will take more than one space.”

Robinson said construction on the facility is expected to be finished by early 2026.

Officials have said operations will begin in 2027.
